CHAPTER 13
Ramsey Puri owned a chain of restaurants called Persian Paradise. Heâd made a name for himself cooking his mother and grandmotherâs recipes that heâd learned during his childhood. The first restaurant had become a hit, and soon heâd opened more locations with the help of investors. Jake had learned all of this on the drive over, thanks to Alâs online search. Now they were heading to a coffee shop to meet with him.
âHe didnât seem too pleased that I was askinâ him to take time outtaâ his day to meet with us,â Al said as they drove down a two-lane side street.
âMaybe because he doesnât want us linking him to Niles Balderelliâs death,â Jake said. âI mean, think about how bad for business it could be to have someone sniffing around and linking you to a high-profile murder.â
âGuess so. Maybe thatâs why he got so short with me,â Al conceded. âStill, I didnât appreciate his tone.â
âDonât let him get to you. We have a job to do.â Jake had noticed lately that Al had been a little less patient than he used to be. Jake wasnât sure what had changed or if it was just a temporary thing, but he knew heâd have to keep an eye on his partner. However, he was also well aware that sometimes his short temper actually helped them out on cases. Kind of like a good cop, bad cop thing. Who knew? Maybe it was going to end up being a good thing for them.
âI wonât, but sometimes I jesâ get tired of people jerkinâ us around. Old habits start cominâ up fer me, and I jesâ wannaâ reach across the table sometimes and shake the truth outta âem.â He reached out with one hand and gripped the air before shaking his fist.
âAs long as you donât actually do that, weâre good,â Jake said with a grin as they pulled into the parking lot of the coffee shop.
âI wonât, but I canât promise I ainât gonnaâ grumble and make him feel like Iâm gonnaâ,â Al warned.
Jake grinned. âWell, who knows? Maybe thatâs exactly the attitude weâre going to need.â
They parked and climbed out of the truck. As they approached the door to go inside, a man who was seated at an outdoor table called out. âAre you the private investigators?â
Al and Jake turned and saw a dark-complected man in light grey slacks and a deep blue shirt open at the neck sitting nearby with a cup in front of him. As he stretched out, he took up more space than seemed necessary in such close quarters.
âWe are,â Jake said as he turned to him. âIâm Jake, and this is Al.â
Ramsey stood up. âRamsey Puri. I would say itâs an honor, but considering the situation.â He shrugged as if what heâd just said wasnât borderline rude. âPlease, have a seat.â
Jake turned to look at Al whose jaw twitched, but he didnât say anything. Instead, he pulled out a chair and silently sat down.
âI was
